One of our Clients asked us to get involved with the remediation of East Wheal Lovell New Engine Shaft at Wendron, Helston, Cornwall. There was a condition to the planning permission granted by Cornwall Council that stated the plugging of the shaft had to overseen by a suitably qualified Chartered Civil and Mining Engineer. We proposed PR Services to undertake the shaft plugging programme of three shafts in the immediate area as part of a existing planning permission to convert the engine house to a domestic dwelling. The main shaft area was excavated using a 360 swing shovel and plugged in three layers structural concrete. The total shaft plug was 3.0 metres depth and over 10 metres across, and over the three pours, 48 cubic metres of C40 concrete with sulphate resisting cement was utilised. A report was provided to very happy Client to clear the Cornwall Council condition and then they were then able to start with the conversion of the Engine House. Well done to all involved!
